Healthy Metabolism

How To Maintain A Healthy Metabolism

Following guidelines on how to lose weight by living a healthy lifestyle will not only help you to shed off those extra kilograms, but it will also help you to maintain a healthy metabolism.

Metabolic rate is the rate at which your body burns calories. Many people are not aware of the implications of having a slow metabolic rate and how this can have an effect on your overall health. A healthy metabolism is one, which is balanced, and allows for peak functioning in every system of the body.

Your resting metabolic rate is often used interchangeably with your basal metabolic rate. Although they are slightly different, estimating either is sufficient for the purpose of losing weight. What these equations will show you is that if you weigh more, your resting metabolic rate will be higher. A healthy metabolism will show a lower resting metabolic rate.

Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so the more muscle you build, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. Every muscle cell that you gain is like a little factory that constantly burns calories for you, even while you sleep. When you exercise you will burn more calories. Weight training is the only way to increase your resting metabolic rate and maintain a healthy metabolism.

If your body senses that food is in short supply, it will slow down your metabolic rate to conserve energy. Over time, the result is that when you do eat, your body will use the calories at a slower rate as fuel, thus creating a backlog of unwanted pounds. To maintain a healthy metabolism you should cut your caloric intake by no more than an average of 500 calories per day, and never less than an average of 1 200 calories total each day.

Small changes like parking further away from the mall entrance than usual, walking the dog a few times a week, or window shopping with your friend instead of sitting still while drinking coffee can all add to a healthy metabolism.
